VOLUNTEERING

The Coolidge School PTO has many activities that need your help. Flyers are sent home several times during the year asking for your time, creativity, and enthusiasm. Below is a listing of all of these opportunities. Click on the activity link to get detailed information, including this year's chair people, important dates, and specific volunteer needs.

PTO SPONSORED FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES
These activites benefit the students by raising money to fund PTO sponsored enrichment events and activities. Also they enable the Coolidge PTO to donate wish list items to the Coolidge School.

PTO SPONSORED ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
These activities benefit the students by creating new learning experiences. They are directly funded by PTO sponsored fundraising events.

There is one event that requires a summertime commitment.

School Store
July/August Adults are need during mid-August to sort and assemble and distribute school supplies before the start of school in September.

These positions require commitment of some kind throughout the year.

Representatives
You are our link to these organizations. You must attend their meetings or obtain their minutes and report back at the Coolidge PTO meetings.

  • Ramapo PTO - 2 meetings/month (Ramapo, Coolidge)
  • Indian Hills PTO - 2 meetings/month (IHHS, Coolidge)
  • Eisenhower PTO - 2 meetings/month (Eisenhower, Coolidge)
  • Board of Education - 1 or 2 BOE meetings/month
  • Coordinating Council - 3 meetings/year, help with their activities
  • WEF (Wyckoff Education Foundation) - monthly meetings, help w/activities

Fifth Grade Representatives
The three 5th grade parent representatives will work together to organize fifth grade activities and fundraising such as pizza lunch, the memory book, and the NYC trip.

Newcomers Representative
Welcomes new families throughout year and organizes Newcomers’ event in September.

Art Docent
This program consists of classroom discussion and hands-on art projects. Volunteers are needed to work with a partner to present
40-minute classroom programs.

Class parents
Two parents from each class will be responsible for organizing class parties, attending field trips, assisting the Friendship Basket committee, coordinating teacher appreciation gifts, and attending monthly PTO meetings.

Coolidge Cookbook
Parents volunteers collect easy to prepare receipes, and have a cookbook created. This book is then available for sale.

Coolidge Garden Club
Coordinate maintenance of the Peace Garden and the Courtyard with children and their parents.

Cultural
Research and preview educational assembly programs (approx. 4 per year). Work with school administration to schedule these assemblies.

Economy Shop
This consignment shop is jointly run by all of the PTOs in town and generates thousands of dollars each year for our schools. We receive our share of profits only if we fill a required number of shifts. Volunteers are needed 1 hour per month on Mondays to help with the bookkeeping and markdowns, and on Tuesdays-Fridays and the first Saturday of the month for the regular selling shifts of only 2-3 hours per month.

Friendship Basket
A very special way to show we care about our “Coolidge Family.” In the event of serious illness, a birth, hospitalization or a family’s special needs, a delicious meal is delivered to the home. Help is needed in preparing portions of these meals.

Great Books
Volunteers are needed to lead 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade student discussion groups on literature. Great books leaders attend a training session before participating in this very rewarding program. Training this year will take place in mid-September.

Hospitality
Bakers are needed to supply baked goods for PTO meetings on the morning of the first Wednesday of each month. Volunteers are also needed to setup and/or cleanup for those meetings.

Media Center
Media center volunteers are needed to assist the children, lend a hand at the circulation desk, and shelve books. Shifts are twice a month and can be split with a friend. It’s fun and no experience is necessary!

Publicity
Regularly throughout the year, pictures are taken at Coolidge events to create positive publicity for Coolidge School through local newspapers and the school bulletin board.

School spirit apparel and accessories will be for sale throughout the year.

Specialty Fundraising
Take advantage of manufacturer rebates through school collections and online shopping. Collection and mailing of these fundraisers are throughout the year.

Book Fair
A book fair held in the gym for 3 days with the opportunity to purchase books for all grade levels and fill teacher and Media Center wish lists.

Gift Wrap Sale
Our very successful Gift Wrap Campaign will be held again this Fall. Help is needed with the distribution on November 1st.
(1) Get into the spirit! Give us a hand! Event dates sale begins 9/21/07, Sales ends 10/5/07, pick up is scheduled for 10/30/07.

Harvest Festival
Come lend a hand in our Pumpkin Patch. Children and their families will be able to purchase Halloween pumpkins and participate in other fun games and activities.

Mathletes
Volunteers are needed to supervise students on various Wednesdays after school from November to March. Students obtain new and valuable math skills in a relaxed environment.

Playground Partners (Midday Fitness)
Volunteers are needed to teach basic, non-competitive outdoor activities to the children for approximately 35 minutes at recess on Tuesdays and Thursdays in October and November.

Science Fair
An fun evening for the children to create and demonstrate their own science experiments.

Flower Day
An opportunity for students to purchase carnations for Valentine’s day for friends and family.

Kids Nights
A theme oriented Friday evening for the students. Parents organize and help with games, food, and activities.

An evening of card playing for Coolidge parents and the community. Raffle baskets and refreshments add to this evening of fun.

Third and fourth graders take bike safety testing run by the Wyckoff Police Department. (1) Event date TBA.

Staff Appreciation Day
A chance to thank the Coolidge staff by providing a luncheon and presenting a student made gift to each classroom teacher (coordinated by the class parents). (1) Event date TBA.

Theme Day
Classrooms are transformed based on a theme (i.e.,The Arts, “Imagine That” or this year's theme World Festival). Students experience several workshops throughout the day conducted by parent volunteers and helpers. An assembly for the whole school begins the day.
