Some Information on Meningitis

Meningitis is a serious illness that most commonly is caused by a virus or bacteria, which infect the membranes that cover the brain and cause inflammation. Symptoms usual consist of fever, severe headache, stiff neck, and irritability. Your child's eyes may also become very sensitive to light.
If meningitis is suspected in your child, then his physician will do a spinal tap to collect some of the fluid in his spine and see if it shows signs of an infection and whether it is caused by a virus or bacteria. It is important to know the type of meningitis, because if it is caused by a bacteria, then your child will need antibiotic therapy as treatment to fight the infection. Viral meningitis is usually more mild and gets better on its own.
