Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School, a 2003 Department of Education No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, is a comprehensive sixth through eighth grade middle school composed of 810 students and 74 faculty. To create a sense of belonging for our school community, grade levels are organized into teams. Each team has a designated team leader and a scheduled daily team-planning period to facilitate curriculum integration and development as well as collective sharing of student progress.
Parents play an important role in the school, working closely with the faculty and staff to coordinate cultural assemblies, field trips, newcomers’ functions, and student social events. The Eisenhower Service Project is a volunteer-driven organization designed to give students opportunities to give back to the community. The school promotes a sense of belonging for every parent through continued parent contact via email, phone calls, notes, and daily announcements posted on the school web site.The school has a wide range of curriculum offerings which provide students with core-content experiences in math, science, language arts, social studies and reading, concentrating on the knowledge and skills that will prepare them for a lifetime of learning well into the 21st century. The school offers four world languages including French, Spanish, Latin and Italian.
Additionally, students engage in exploratory arts courses including digital imaging, digital video, multimedia, curriculum project, art, home economics, robotics, and television studio production. An array of special interest co-curricular activities is also available. Clubs include Stock market, Brainbusters, Courtyard Club, School Store, Latin Club, ETV Club, Online Literary Magazine, Science Olympiad, Fish Tank Club and Newspaper Club. The school has a strong performing arts program with outstanding concerts performed by almost all students including Orchestra, Chorus, Girls Chorale, Stage Band and Jazz Band. The athletic department refreshingly balances the spirit of competition with sportsmanship while producing highly successful boys and girls interscholastic travel teams and intramural leagues.
Advances in technology at the school further nurture an atmosphere of belonging. The school has a T3 fiber optic backbone and both a school-wide wireless and hard-wired network. Email is a primary means of communication for teachers, administrators, and parents. By keeping close connections through email, the community of learners maintains a close-knit sense of belonging. All teachers have laptops on which they post their lesson plans and homework. They use them to teach through PowerPoint, Web Quests instructional videos or iMovie presentations. Grades and report cards are completed with the aid of the laptop computers. There are five computer-classroom instructional areas equipped to teach twenty-four students each, and five mobile ibook labs connected to the wireless network in the school.
The rigorous academic program provides opportunities to meet the needs of all students. A full range of special education services is available to students, including an in-class support option for each team. Four full-time guidance counselors along with the teaching teams help coordinate social, emotional and academic services for students.
The professional staff is continuously engaged in voluntary and required professional development activities. These activities include graduate work, in-service programs, district course work, on-going support groups and special workshops. This process of continuous learning serves as an excellent model for our student body and community.
In 2003, the Federal Department of Education recognized Eisenhower as a No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. In 1999, The New Jersey Department of Education recognized the school as a "Star School," the highest award given by the State of New Jersey. In addition, the school received NJ Best Practice awards in 1998 for Technology and 2000 for Health.
The warmth and pride at Eisenhower can be appreciated by a stroll through the campus—past the lighted art galleries, central courtyard, modern science labs, aquariums, lively murals, and manicured gardens. Eisenhower School is truly a place for all to belong…students, parents, faculty and community.
