LANGUAGE ARTS LITERACY

Students should now be reading (at least) 30 minutes per night.

This is homework each night for this class. Students practice strategies learned in class in their independent book.  Students should have their independent book in class with them each day. They will keep a log of time and pages read both at home and in class. A reader's notebook will be kept in class with notes, book reviews, activities, letters and reader responses.

The writer's notebook has already been personalized to reflect the student's

personality and will be used for notes as well as to generate lists to give ideas for writing and entries that may develop into writing pieces.  The notebook

will be in constant use as writers begin to write about topics meaningful to

them. This is the place for students to reflect and practice the craft of

writing.  Writing tips and grammar will be part of the notebook as well.

Word study will include spelling and vocabulary quizzes.  Students will

keep lists in their notebook from class work as well as their independent

books. Learning to use the words in writing and speaking and to define words from context clues is an important aspect of word study in class.

Students must type a list of 10 words and definitions from their notebook

by Friday, October 23.  A quiz on this list will be given on 10/29.

EXTRA HELP - Students may come in any Tuesday, Wednesday or

Thursday either from 7:30 - 8:00 AM or from 3:00 - 3:30 PM.

Other days (or longer after school hours) available as needs arise.
