Working with Chemistry Animations

You will be working with chemistry animations at the Iowa State University website. The copyright for these simulations and animations is with the chemical education research group at Iowa State University.

Spend about 10 minutes at each animaiton.  Be sure to do the dry cell, car battery, and reactions between metals and acid.  If you have time, do the flashlight.  Answer the questions on the worksheet as you complete the simulations. Use the back button in the browser to return to this page for the next llink.

How does a dry cell work?  Follow the directions at the site.

How does a car battery work?    Follow the directions at the site.

What reactions do various metals have with an acid?   READ THIS BEFORE YOU PRESS THE LINK:  At the animaiton site, press "start."  On the next screen, select "Activity."  On the next screen choose "Activity 4."  This should now show a virtual beaker of acid.  You can test each type of metal to see what happens. At the base of the start button is a button that allows you to view the reaction at a molecular level.  Be sure to use it.  You'll need to remove the metal strip to start a new test.

How does a flashlight work?   Follow the directions at the site.  Cell Menu takes you to the next component.
