Air

Source: NASA

Air is a mixture of gases, water vapor, and particulate matter.  Since air is composed of matter it has mass and it takes up space (volume).  Density is a derived property based on the equation mass/volume = density.  Because air is gaseous, the volume is dependent on the temperature and pressure of the system.  The denisty of air shown in the table is based on measurements taken under specific conditions of temperature and pressure.  In class we explore air using a balloon and beach ball.

Things you should know because you live on the planet.

The name of the gas that accounts for about 78% of air's mixture.

The name of the gas that accounts for about 21% of air's mixture.

Test your understanding with virtual samples of air, helium, water and oil.  You will need to have Shockwave on your computer to do this activity.  Try This: Mass, Volume, Density (NOVA Balloon Race Around the World website)
