From New Jersey to Japan

November 12-30, 2006

Matsuyama Castle:  November 20, 2006

After a morning of highly informative meetings with students and faculty of Ehime University and a courtesy visit with the Superintendent of Schools, we trekked up to Matsuyama Castle.  Matsuyama Castle was built about 400 years ago.  It was constructed during a relatively peaceful period of Japan's history not so much as battle fortress but as a display of wealth and power.  The castle is designed with many clever defense features including raised door thresholds, small openings for arrow crossfire into a courtyard, and ports for throwing rocks.  The castle features a beautiful garden on the lower terrace.

Native oranges that sweeten after they are harvested and stored.   There is no photo angle that can do justice to the climbing path.

At every turn in the path there was a Kodak moment.   The gate with no door to confuse the enemy.

Visitors staying at the Dogo Onsen rented native folk dresses to wear for the day.   A view from the battlements of the castle keep.

It was well worth the climb to the top.
