From New Jersey to Japan

November 12-30, 2006

Thanksgiving Day:  November 23, 2006

Today was a national holiday in Japan called Labor Thanksgiving Day.  It also happened to be Thanksgiving Day in the United States.  Schools in Japan were closed today, so our group did a tour of  local cultural assets.

Matsuyama is on the island of Shikoku.  there are 88 temples on Shikoku.  Buddhist pilgrims can take a walking journey of 700 miles to visit each temple.  This takes about 8 weeks to complete.  Each temple has a stamp that can be added to a temple book.  We took the easy route and rode the bus to Ishiteji Temple.

Kukai, who became known as the great saint after his death (774-835 AD), traveled to China as a student monk.  He integrated Buddhism into Japanese religion founding the Shingon sect.  Kukai invented the Kana syllabary, wrote influentital religious tracts, wrote the oldest know Japanese dictionary, and was an accomplished calligrapher, poet, and sculptor.
