The Camfield Lab was set up on the west side of the school at 4 PM on April 11, 2007. Although particulate matter counts were considered good in general for Bergen County, the air samples showed moderate levels of PM 2.5 and PM 10. This corresponded to increased traffic on Route 208 and around the school. Construction at the school may explain the larger particles. The afternoon weather conditions were overcast. Air samples were taken from 8 AM until 1 PM on April 12. High levels of particulate matter were measured during the morning hours with a drop during mid-day. This correlated with commuter traffic on Route 208 and bus and car pool traffic around the school. The morning began with heavy rainfall that tapered off, but continued throughout the day. Rain water was collected in an open area. A sample was evaporated. Large 10 micron particles were visible in the evaporation dish. The granular soil particles were probably the result of the school construction project. The sampling continued April 13 at noon and ended at 3 PM. Particulate matter levels increased throughout the afternoon again corresponding to traffic patterns on Route 208 and activity around the school. Construction activity resulted in periodic spikes. The weather was cool and clear. |
