Results of Grade 8 Asthma Survey 2007

Self-Reported Asthma Among Grade 8 Students at Eisenhower Middle School

A total of 217 grade 8 students ages 13-14 completed a survey regarding asthma and health status.  The results are shown in the tables.  Twenty-five percent of the student reported having or having had asthma.  Students who reported having asthma also reported more days absent because of respiratory illnesses than students who did not have asthma.

Students who have asthma or had asthma reported more episodes of shortness of breath, wheezing or coughing during exercise, emotional stress, allergen exposure, and respiratory infections.  Students with asthma or a history of asthma did not report more sleep interruptions than students not reporting asthma. 

Statistics from a similar study of high school students involving 13,553 students from all over the United States appear below.  The national survey was conducted in 2003.
