Skin

Epidermis- the outer layer of skin the includes the waxy dead cells of the keratin layer, pores, and the basal cells

Dermis- layer of the skin that contains sebaceous glands (oil glands), sensory receptors, tiny muscles that can cause hairs to stand up,  and sweat gland ducts

Subcutaneous  layer- the innermost layer of skin through which blood vessels pass, nerve fibers enter, sweat glands rest, fat deposits, and hair follicles begin

Functions of Skin

1. Prevents loss of water

2. Protects the body from injury and infection

3. Regulates body temperature

4. Eliminates waste

5. Gathers information from the environment

6. Produces vitamin D

The epidermis is covered by a keratin layer of dead skin cells.  This layer provides protection and sheds bacteria and other substances.  Nerves, blood vessels, sweat glands, oil glands, and hair follicles are found in the dermis and subcutaneous layer.

Good skin care includes eating a balanced diet, drinking water, limiting sun exposure, and staying clean and dry.
