Water in the Atmosphere

Plants release water into the atmosphere in a process called transpiration. Evaporation occurs at the surface of water bodies. Water vapor in the air will condense when the temperature reaches the dew point. |
Clouds are a form of condensed water vapor. When water molecules form droplets they fall back to the surface as precipitation. Precipitation includes rain, snow, sleet, and hail. |
Dew point: The temperature at which condensation takes place.
Humidity: The amount of water in the air.
Relative Humidity: The amount of water in the air as a percentage of how much water the air could hold at a given temperature.

Clouds form when water vapor cools in the air and condenses. Precipitation occurs when droplets form. |
Condensation begins around a tiny particle of dust. These are called the condensation nuclei. |
Relative Humidity Class Activity
On-line relative humidity calculator Use the sling psychrometer. Record the temperature of the wet bulb thermometer and teh dry bulb thermometer. Enter the dry bulb temperature. Then enter the wet bulb temperature. Select wet bulb. The relative humidity will appear in the answer box. Measurements must be in Celsius. Compare your data to the weather station data.
Wind Chill
Wind causes evaporation. Evaoporation is felt as wind chill.
