1 class period to complete research

1-2 class periods for model construction and explanation of the model

1 class period for discussion of video segment

If assigned as a long-term project, allow one week.  If done in class, allow 3-4 days.

Extend Your Investigation

3-5 class periods for research, project development, and presentations.

(Assignment as a group project instead of  an individual project is strongly recommended.)

Materials and Equipment

Computers with Internet access

Sand, gravel, hand lotion pumps, small containers, etc.

Teaching Strategies
  • Introduce the Observe and Analyze section as a large group activity.
  • Organize students into research groups of 2 to 4 students to complete the Collect Background Information.
  • Watch the video as a whole class using the video notes organizer
  • Check student understanding through discussion
  • Assign Bring It Home and Extend your Investigation as long-term group projects that me done using class time, home work, or a combination.

All students will develop an understanding of the environment as a system of interdependent components affected by human activity and natural phenomena.
