Introduction

One day, you'll choose a career, but how will you know which one will be right for you?  Perhaps you'll base your decision on a specific talent that you have, or maybe on something that fascinates you.  Regardless of your choice, you will have compiled a great deal of knowledge in school that will subconsciously guide you in your decision.  If you become a teacher, you will encounter many different challenges, and meet all different types of students, each with different interests.  They'll ask you questions like:

Why do we have to study history?

What does it have to do with our lives?

Am I ever going to use this information in my life?

My answer to you has always been that we should study world cultures to better understand and become tolerant of other peoples.  You've heard me say over and over again this year that I believe we can make our future better by learning about the past. Teaching Ancient World Cultures is exciting, and in our Ancient Rome unit it's your turn to be the teacher!  How will you answer the questions you will face?

Task

You are the Ancient World Cultures Teacher!   You will be making a virtual trip back to Ancient Rome (800 BCE - 500 CE) and collecting as much data as you can on your chosen topic.  Upon your return, you will compile your information and create a Power Point presentation on your chosen topic of Roman life.  You will then use it to present and teach your material to your classmates.  Students are required to take notes, and at the end of each presentation, every student will create a test question and answer based on the topic of the day.  A unit test will then be created from your presentation and your classmate's questions.

Assessment

There are four individual grades that you will receive for this project.

Individual Grade

Write a Project Paragraph explaining your contribution to the group project.  Your focus should be on the work YOU did during each part of the project. This grade will be based upon your Project Paragraph and my observations.  A list of questions has been provided for you, to help you in completing this part of the assessment.

Group Grade

The project and presentation  (lesson) will be the basis for this part of the assessment.  Be sure to use the rubric to guide you in your product development.

Questionnaire Grade

The project questionnaire will give me your opinion on the webquest.
Unit Test

A unit test will be created from your presentation (lesson).  After your lesson, each of your classmates will create one multiple choice or true/false question to be used on the test.

Conclusion

How was your first teaching experience?  Did any of your students ask you the questions that you have asked me? Did this assignment give you a better understanding of Ancient Roman culture? Did you make any personal connections about our society and the society of the Ancient Romans?  Do you think you would like to become a teacher, or do something else? Whatever you choose, remember all of the contributions from those cultures which came before us, and REACH for the stars!
