Basic Facts
  • A hurricane is a severe tropical storm that forms in the southern Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, or in the eastern Pacific Oceans.
Hurricanes need three factors to develop:
  1. Warm Water
  2. Low Pressure
  3. Light Winds
  • They begin off the coast of Africa
  • When hurricanes move onto land, they have heavy rains, strong winds, and huge waves
  • Hurricane season in the North Atlantic is from June 1 to November 30
  • Over a 3 year period, five hurricanes strike the U.S. coastline from Texas to Maine
