The World of Hurricanes
Names of a hurricane
Hurricane names are chosen from a list selected by the World Meteorological Organization. When there is a very destructive hurricane they often retire its name and they change it. Since 1954 they have changed 40 names. Hurricanes are given names so we can identify them because there might be more than one hurricane at a time. Before the end of the 19th century an Australian meteorologist began to give female names to hurricanes. In 1979 both male and female names were used to identify hurricanes. There are six lists of hurricane names and they reuse the lists every six years. The lists have every letter covered with a name except Q, U, X, Y, and Z.
