Functions of the Heart
The heart is a muscle that works even when you aren't thinking about it. It pumps blood throughout your body. Blood pumped into the heart is blue and is de-oxygenated blood. When it enters the lungs it turns red becoming oxygenated blood.

Your heart is like a transporter. Blood that flows through the heart carries oxygen from you lungs to your heart than the blood flows throughout the body. It also carries the glucose your cells use to produce energy. The size of your heart is about the size of your fist. Each time your heart beats it pushes blood through the blood vessels of the cardiovascular system.

There are two phases of the heart. Phase one is when the heart relaxes and fills with blood. Phase two is when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood forward. The thump-thump is heard during the second phase.
