Circle Graph Directions for the College Planning Project
#4 Costs to Attend - Making a Circle Graph
1. Determine the Costs for the first year.
Add them up to find the total cost.
2. Once you have the total cost, turn the costs of each into a percentage. Use proportions.cost part = % part Example: 22,300 = _x
cost whole % whole 35,910 100
x = 62.1%
(round your answer to nearest tenth of percent)3. Once your have the percentage, use proportions to convert the percentage to degrees to find the central angle measure. Since there are 360 degrees in a circle, 360 is our whole.
% part = degrees part Example: 62.1 = x
% whole degrees whole 100 360
x = 223.2 degreesInformation Needed:
COSTS Percentages Central Angle
tuition $22,300 62.1% 223.2
room & board $ 6,170 17.2% 61.9
books & supplies $ 924 2.6% 9.4
meal plan $ 1,416 3.9% 14.0
travel costs $ 1,600 4.5% 16.2
($400 flight x 4)
personal expenses $ 2,000 5.6% 20.2
computer lab fees $ 1,500 4.2% 15.1
___________________________________________________
TOTAL $35,910 100.1% 3604. Now that you have all the necessary information, you are ready to make your circle graph. Use the central angle measures to determine the size of each section. Label each section with the percentage and type of cost (Example: Tuition 62.1%)
#5 Overview of 4-Years in College - Calculating Costs
1. Use the total cost from your circle graph for the first year (Example: $35,910).
2. To find the second year, you should add 5% to the first year. To do that, multiply the first year by 0.05. Add that to the original amount.
(Example: $35,910 x 0.05 = $1,795.50,
so $35,910 + $1795.50 = $37,705.50)3. To find the third year, add 6% to the second year’s total. To do that, multiply the second year by 0.06. Add that to the original amount.
(Example: $37,705.50 x 0.06 = $2,262.33,
so $37,705.50 + $2,262.33 = $39,967.83)4. To find the fourth year, add 7% to the third year’s total. To do that, multiply the third year by 0.07. Add that to the original amount.
(Example: $39,967.83 x 0.07 = $2,797.75,
so $39,967.83 + 2,797.75 = $42,765.58)5. To find the grand total, add up all four years of school.
(Example: year 1 35,910
year 2 37,705.50
year 3 39,967.83
year 4 +42,765.58
TOTAL $156,348.91
