June Weissman Barchenko
jbarchenko@wyckoffschools.orgFourth Grade WEL The Wyckoff Extended Learning program provides students with the opportunity to sharpen their creativity, problem-solving and independent research skills in order to discover and develop their abilities and interests.
Students introduce themselves through creative autobiographies of their own design.
Fourth grade WEL students work individually and in groups to stretch their creativity and problem solving skills. They enjoy an interactive ride on the Saturday Subway, a trip which takes them on a supersonic idea from Kansas City to Pittsburgh, Dublin, Tokyo, Santa Monica and back to Kansas City. In order to proceed they overcome many challenges. Their tasks include composing educational songs, writing scintillating dialogues, and acting in their own skits.

Other fourth grade activities include WEL.com and Mindbender books, which engage student imagination and exercise the multiple intelligences.
Each student ends the year studying a person who had made a measurable difference to the world. The creation of biopoems and hero sandwiches develops an understanding of the subject as a three-dimensional person, complete with talents and weaknesses, desires and aversions, just like the rest of us. Students choose from a wide range of creative presentation modes, including birthday parties, castaway stories, and awards ceremonies, so that they can share their discoveries with their classmates.
