Sixth Grade WEL

Sixth grade WEL students develop more positive self-concepts through a celebration of their unique strengths. Each designs a creative, durable name project based on a WEL name chosen to highlight his or her talents. Projects should accompany students to college as reminders of the success and security they realized in class.

The cycle continues with an exploration of various personality styles. By better understanding and accepting themselves and others, students can fortify group skills for effective interaction with peers, family, teachers, and others.

Students explore issues and ideas from various points of view. Groups write and perform skits revolving around role playing scenarios so that they may enhance their understanding of timely world issues and deepen their sensitivities to those with other world views.

This year, students chose their own controversial topics, which included standardized testing, animal testing, evolution, minimum weight for models, the cost vs. benefits of the space program, class size, and deforestation.

A study of personal and physical walls begins with an analysis of Robert Frost's "Mending Wall." Pairs of students then select a wall to study and present through poetry, dramatic expression, and other creative media.

An intensive mindbender packet sharpens math/logical intelligence and helps prepare students for the types of deductive reasoning popular on entrance exams.

Rubrics and a reflection of all the ways students have grown through the cycle further foster student metacognition and accountability. Confidence and presentation skills are developed and reinforced through the many project presentations.

Sixth and seventh grade WEL are team taught by June Weissman Barchenko and Paulette Steffa.
