Student Personnel Services

The Wyckoff Public School District offers a full complement of student personnel services in compliance with state and federal legislation. These include services provided by Child Study Team members, School Counselors, Speech/Language Specialists, Nurses, and all Special Education teachers and providers. These services are designed to identify students who may have special needs and to provide additional interventions/programs/services either within general or special education.

Consideration for provision of services may be initiated by the building Intervention & Referral Services (I&RS) Team. The I&RS Team includes the principal, a reading teacher, the counselor/social worker, a special education teacher and the classroom teacher. Working as a team, the group meets to identify the needs of the student and develop an Action Plan. The Action Plan monitors strategies and provides support to the classroom teacher. The Team meets and reviews the student's progress. If there is a need for further assessment of the student's situation, a referral to the Child Study Team (CST) or the 504 Committee may be made. At this point, the CST or 504 Committee would be convened with the parents and would determine if an evaluation is appropriate and, if so, what types of assessments will be conducted.

An evaluation by the CST entails a diagnostic study of the whole child and is done only with written parental consent. It may include an educational evaluation by the Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant (LDT-C), a social assessment by the School Social Worker, a psychological evaluation by the School Psychologist, and, if determined as needed, a speech/language evaluation by the Speech/Language Specialist. Other evaluations may be conducted as needed. After the diagnostic study is completed, the CST will present findings to the student's parents and teacher. Eligibility for special education and related services will be discussed.

Should the student be determined eligible, an IEP meeting which includes the above participants as well as a special education teacher, will be convened to discuss the student's present levels of educational performance including strengths and needs. Goals will be formulated, and least restrictive program options will be discussed. These options may include the use of supplementary aids and services, Resource Program options, special class placement, or any other option allowable under state and federal codes.

Under state code, any parent may refer a child for evaluation for special education by writing to either the building principal or the Director of Student Personnel Services. The Wyckoff Special Education Manual is available in the Wyckoff Student Personnel Services Office.
In accordance with Board of Education policy, student personnel services personnel, including CST members, are involved in any drug or alcohol related situations occurring within the schools.

The Board of Education Policy Manual is available in the Board of Education Office or the Wyckoff Public Library.
