Special Education for Preschoolers with Disabilities

Pre-school disabled programs for children ages 3 through 5 are conducted in Wyckoff under the sponsorship of the Northwest Bergen Council for Special Education, Region I. These programs are designed for children who have an identified disabling condition and/or a measurable developmental delay in physical, social, communication and/or emotional areas and who may require and would benefit from special education and related services. Eligibility for these services is determined by a Child Study Team evaluation of the child. Any resident who has a child, ages birth through 5 years, who may require special services, should contact the Student Personnel Services Office at 848-5690 for further information.

Project Child Find
Parents who suspect their preschool-age child may be disabled can now get free help from their local school districts. The Northwest Bergen Council for Special Education is taking part in CHILD FIND, a statewide program to locate and provide services for those children, age 3 to 5 years, who may have physical, mental or emotional difficulties. Screening, professional guidance, and an educational program (if needed) are all available free of charge through your schools.
Your child might benefit from special help if:

  • Child has trouble seeing people or objects.
  • Child has trouble hearing voices or other sounds.
  • Child is unusually quiet.
  • Child throws "temper tantrums" or cannot get along with others.
  • Child cannot pronounce words properly.
  • Child has a particular health problem.

Each public school is responsible for providing a system of free, appropriate public education to eligible pupils through 21 years of age. Individuals and families who know of a child within this age range with a suspected or known educational disability should:
Call the public school district where the child resides to find out the name of the appropriate contact person.

Send a written request for a written evaluation to that contact person. Include the parent's name and child's name, age, address, and suspected or known disability.
The parent(s) or legal guardian can expect a written notice of determination as to whether the child study team will conduct an evaluation. The notice should be received by the parent(s) or legal guardian within 20 days of the district's receipt of the request.
