Welcome to First Grade

First grade is the first year that most children attend school for a full day. In first grade the children develop their reading and writing skills. An eclectic approach is used, combining literature and phonics. Math concepts are introduced with manipulatives. By the end of first grade, the children are required to know addition and subtraction facts 0 - 10. Science entails many hands-on experiences including balance and motion, rocks, and plants. In Social Studies the units of study include families, communities, holidays, and other cultures around the world. Our Star of the Week program promotes positive self esteem for all first grade students. Teamwork between home and school is crucial to having this important year be a successful experience.
